La Rochelle is the capital of the Charente-Maritime and gateway to the island Île de Ré which we will skip due to the mass tourism.
In the city, especially around the old port, it can also be pretty busy, but it is simply cozier. Noteworthy are:
- The old port with the Tour Nicolas and the Tour de la Chaine
- The medieval galleries with shops (lovely protection from the sun in midsummer)
- Boattrips at sea
- The aquarium (known well outside France)
It goes without saying that there are lots of cafes and restaurants, especially around the old port, which is logic given the great view.
The website of La Rochelle with information about the origin of the city and loaded with tips.
The aquarium of La Rochelle is known far beyond the french borders and with good reason. Definitely worth a visit when the sun is shining too bright (again).
